March Wellness Student of the Month is...

Zachary Marto

The Wellness Department would like to congratulate Zach for is hard work and dedication to excellence in Wellness. He consistently participates with patience and respect for his peers and enthusiastically works to better himself in all that he is learning.

First and Last Name: Zachary Marto

Grade: 8

What elementary school did you come from?

The Mighty Claypit Hill School

Tell us about yourself. What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I enjoy reading, soccer, chess, badminton, hanging out in the Wellness Center after school, and skiing.

Why is being active important to you?

Being active is important to me because of my physical health, my mental health, and my happiness. Not staying active can result in becoming frail or obese. Staying active also makes you a stronger thinker and allows you to concentrate harder. Finally, I love being active, so not being active would take a large chunk out of my life.

What advice would you give to a student who doesn’t like to exercise?

If you don't exercise, I would encourage giving something different a try. I believe that a lot of kids that don't exercise do so because they have tried popular forms of exercise such as basketball and football and decided they dislike them. That's perfectly fine. I was introduced to badminton when my parents gave me a badminton net for Christmas one year. I don't play on a team, but I like playing in my free time. I never would've expected to like badminton, but as it turn out, I love it! I believe trying new sports can result in more physical activity.

Favorite Wellness unit and why.

My favorite Wellness unit was probably fencing. I really enjoyed badminton as well, but I think fencing comes out on top because I really enjoyed it and it was something new.

When I want a healthy snack I reach for...an apple. I can always find (and eat) an apple.

To relax I... read. I tend to fall into books and forget about my surroundings.

If I were a WMS Wellness teacher I would add... a general first aid unit to the curriculum. I think that CPR is a great unit, but saving lives is important, and the more first aid the student body knows, the safer we become.

On my first day of school I wish I knew... that Ms. Riddle is actually harmless.

Tell us something about yourself most people would be surprised to know.

Most people would probably be surprised to know that I built my computer over the summer.
