The Wellness Department is please to announce our 5th annual Wellness Week!
Monday June 6th -Friday June 10th.
The goal of Wellness week is to promote active & healthy living for all students. We want to expose our students to new ideas, concepts, and styles of teaching. We are fortunate to get some great local presenters to come and volunteer their time to make Wellness Week a success. Check out who we have coming:
Maxwell Isaak-Max & LJ DiCarlo (Wayland parent) are co-owners of the newly opened CrossFit Tilt in Waltham. Max has a BA from UMASS Amherst & holds a CrossFit Level 1 & CrossFit Kids certificate. Max was a Regional Team member of the CrossFit Games for CrossFit New England last year earning 6th place. Max believes that fitness can be fun & is the foundation that confidence is built upon. All adults & children can achieve this level of confidence when their activity of choice is fun. CrossFit Tilt has classes specifically designed for middle school aged children on Mondays & Wednesdays at 3:30, and Saturdays at 11am. Read more about their middle & high school program here.
Max will be presenting CrossFit Kids.
Erica Tharp, Wayland Parent- Erica is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher & has trained at the Yandara Yoga Institute in Baja Mexico and the New York School of Yogic Arts. Her style is creative, energetic, and strength building Vinyasa Flow that focusses on connecting breath with movement. Erica is currently teaching at Elements 3 Yoga in Framingham.
Erica will be presenting yoga for adolescents.
John Woodward- John is a certified T'ai Chi instructor offering classes in Framingham, Sudbury, Wayland and Natick. He teaches Traditional T'ai Chi as well as T'ai Chi for Better Balance. He has studied T'ai Chi for more than 30 years and has also studied Qigong, Neigong, Bagua and Xing-Yi. Jon has been teaching for more than ten years and strives to make his classes fun and enjoyable for his students. His approach to teaching is based on the traditions and practices passed down to him as well as his respect for the unique individuality of each student. John will be presenting T'ai Chi for adolescents.
Tara Kilgallen- Tara began studying yoga at the age of 16 when introduced to the practice by her dance instructor. She immersed herself not only into the physical practice, but also began studying the philosophy and theological roots that helped her form a strong mind- body connection. After years of self study, asana and meditation practice, Tara was certified as an instructor through the Yoga Institute of Houston, Texas in 2001. At just 20 years old, she began teaching group Vinyasa classes in the Wellesley and Natick area, while continuing her education, receiving certifications in Prenatal Yoga, and as a Rieki Master. In 2004, she ventured to California to begin a business of her own, a private yoga studio in close connection with the family business Tushita Heaven. After much success on the west coast, Tara and her husband returned to the greater- Boston area to focus on their family and other pursuits in 2008. Since, Tara has taught group and private classes at Lumina Mind Body Studios, and most recently has been given the honor of Co-Director of the yoga program for Lumina. Tara's classes reflect her spirit and passion for yoga.

Steve Crowell- Received his Physical Therapy degree from Boston University in 1988, and his undergraduate degree in Biology and Psychology from Boston College in 1981. Steve has had his own Physical Therapy practice for over 22 years. He had advanced training to treat a wide range of physical therapy disorders from musculoskeletal (bones and muscle) to neurological diseases. Manual therapy and exercise training are the common techniques he utilizes, working to restore healthy bodies and movement. From sprains and strains, back and neck problems, pediatrics and geriatrics, they treat just about anything that adversely effects the way we move and function. Steve will be presenting on mobility & prevention of injuries.
Dr. Bradley Weiss-Dr. Weiss began his career in Williston, Vermont in 1984. He committed himself to helping his patients obtain optimum health, while defending their right to access chiropractic as a health care choice. He rose up the ranks of the Vermont Chiropractic Association, being President from 1995 until 1999. He was named Vermont Chiropractor of the Year in 1997. As his practice and reputation grew, Dr. Weiss continued to expand his treatment skills and became certified in Active Release Techniques (ART). Dr. Weiss currently works at Performance Health Center in Natick, which is just down the street from us!
Dr. Weiss will be presenting on mobility & prevention of injury.
Bike Day at WMS!
Join us after school on Friday, June 10th, 2:20-3 pm, near the bike racks in the front of the school!Celebrate the fun, freedom, and fitness associated with bicycling! Local bike racers will be on hand to lead skills sessions, pump tires, adjust brakes, lube chains, and do minor repairs.
Bike Day is brought to you by the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition (MassBike – www.MassBike.org) and USAC Racing Club BikewaySource/Bell Lap Racing. MassBike is a non-profit organization that promotes a bicycle-friendly environment and encourages bicycling for fun, fitness, and transportation. A key aspect of MassBike’s mission is to educate cyclists, of all ages, on how to be safer and smarter when riding their bikes.
Soles4Souls Sneaker Drive!
The wellness department is partnering with Soles4Souls, a not for profit global social enterprise committed to fighting poverty through the collection & distribution of shoes & clothing. Soles4Soles accepts all types of shoes: athletic, running, dress, sandals, pumps, heels, work boots, cleats, dance, flip flops, just as long as they are new or gently worn.
"Since 2006 Soles4Souls has collected and distributed 26 million pairs of shoes to those in need in 127 countries around the world and all 50 states in the U.S.
Every day children are prevented from attending school, adults are unable to work. Walking becomes unbearable. A new pair of shoes provides relief in many developing nations around the globe, in times of disaster, and helps bridge the economic gap in the United States and Canada."
Clean our your closet & support an amazing organization. There will be a collection bin in the main entrance of the middle school. Please make sure the pairs are tied together or use an elastic to keep them a pair. Thank you for your donation!

The Wayland Boosters is excited for WMS Wellness Week and appreciates the Wellness Staff for all their efforts to teach our middle schoolers to live active and healthy lives.
